Growing Sustainable Flowers on Less than an Acre

Growing Sustainable Flowers on Less than an Acre

When people imagine a flower farm, they often picture rolling fields stretching for acres. At Sustainable Stems in Dallas Fort Worth, our reality looks a little different — and we wouldn’t change a thing.

Our farm operates on 2.5 acres, but our actual flower production takes place on just 400 square feet. That’s less than an acre — yet it’s enough to grow thousands of stems each season for bouquets, subscriptions, and bulk bloom buckets.

Maximizing Small Spaces
We make the most of our growing area with succession planting, meaning as soon as one crop finishes, another takes its place. This keeps flowers blooming longer and ensures there’s always something fresh for our customers.

We also focus on crops that perform well in North Texas: zinnias, sunflowers, lisianthus, and other hardy seasonal varieties. By choosing resilient flowers, we get high yields and long vase life — the perfect combination for our community.

Sustainability First
Growing on a smaller footprint also means we can give more attention to the soil, water use, and sustainable practices. Each bed is planned with intention, helping us grow without unnecessary waste.

Big Impact, Small Farm
Our little patch of blooms proves that you don’t need acres of land to make a difference. Local flowers reduce the carbon footprint of imported blooms, arrive fresher, and keep money in the DFW economy. For us, that’s the true power of small-scale farming.

So the next time you enjoy a bouquet from Sustainable Stems, know that it came from a farm that proves small can be mighty.
